When “White Lotus” began production, Lacy said the set was energized by having cameras roll again. “I felt like, ’I don’t know how I’m going to have two kids and buy a house and do this, like it just might not happen’… then a job would come along and buoy me long enough to not feel that way anymore.” Lacy has been recognizable for more than a decade, popping up, for instance, on the final season of “The Office” as Pete, a new salesman at Dunder Mifflin, or as a suitor for Rooney Mara in “Carol.” There was also a recurring role as Lena Dunham’s good-guy boyfriend, Fran, in HBO’s “Girls.”Īlthough he was “working consistently,” Lacy said doubt about that next job would creep in. There’s just nothing better for me (besides) my family and this work. If I’m home between now and New Year’s, that’ll be the longest we’ve been in one place in two plus years,” said Lacy, 38, over Zoom from his home in Connecticut that he shares with his wife and two sons.īut he’s also quick to note his good fortune because “My love for this work fires every one of my cylinders. “Since ‘White Lotus,’ I feel like I haven’t stopped moving. While most people slowed down during the pandemic, Jake Lacy’s schedule accelerated.

This Friday, the couple's latest collaboration, The Judge, will open. Since then, Susan has overseen most of Robert's non-Marvel movies, either as an executive producer ( Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, 2010's Due Date), or as the film's main producer (2009's Sherlock Holmes and its 2011 sequel, his biggest non-Marvel hits by far). ![]() The couple first met while working on the 2003 psychological horror film Gothika - it was Susan's first movie as a full-fledged producer, and it was one of Robert's first roles after he was fired from the Fox series Ally McBeal following two post-jail drug arrests. But it's one that may not exist if Susan was not in Robert's life, not only as his wife, but also as a tenacious and meticulous film producer. The timeline of Robert's career resurgence - the embarrassing arrests in the 1990s, the nearly year-long jail term in 2000, the hard-won sobriety and standout roles in films like 2005's Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and 2007's Zodiac, and the career rocket fuel that was 2008's Iron Man and all it's wrought - is well-trod territory, a great Hollywood comeback story told time and again. "I guess I enjoy corralling that."ĭowney's accomplishments - enviable for anyone aspiring for genuine success as a Hollywood producer - are important to acknowledge, because, for many, her biggest achievement is helping to transform her husband, Robert Downey Jr., from a drug-addled washout into the most valuable movie star in the world. "I have no idea why, and this is other's observations of me - I tend to be in the realm of these very complicated personalities," she said. When asked to describe her style as a producer, Downey smiled wryly. All told, the films she's worked on have grossed nearly $1.2 billion domestically, and $2.7 billion worldwide. It guided her to a prestigious film school, and into a sturdy, successful career as a movie producer ( The Reaping, The Invasion, The Brave One, Orphan, Whiteout, The Book of Eli, Unknown) with mega-producer Joel Silver. I loved entertaining, big Hollywood movies."Īnd that childhood passion has come to define Downey's entire life. "Whenever there would be a new one, I'd make my mom go get it for me. "I had a poster in my room of all the Academy Award-winning movies ," Downey told BuzzFeed News last month at the Toronto International Film Festival. Downey had cajoled her local Chicago suburb movie theater into giving her a giant promotional banner for Cruise's character-driven family drama Rain Man. But it wasn't a dreamy pinup of the actor from teen-bait fare like Risky Business or Top Gun. Like so many starry-eyed teenage girls in the 1980s, Susan Downey had a poster of Tom Cruise on her bedroom wall. The Quantum QF8C is almost in another class of equipment (in price and power), but I’d be remiss if I didn’t at least mention it here. Unfortunately, it does not have high-speed sync. The strobe is powerful, can be triggered by wireless eTTL (though can’t be a command module), has a sync-socket and an external power-pack jack, and costs well under $200. The Yongnuo YN-565EX is flagship of their new TTL line of flashes (they got into the business by building low-cost, manual controlled flashes for “strobists”). Yongnuo is a relatively new player in the flash game, but they have quickly earned a strong reputation for listening to the needs of their customers and designing low-cost, reliable strobes. Though it doesn’t lead in any particular category, it matches the 580ex II in nearly every regard, and has sync and battery-pack sockets. Nissin’s Di866 Mark IIis perhaps the best all-around flash in the group (after the 580ex). The Metz 50 AF-1 offers the same features in a smaller package, for nearly $200 less. It does, however, have a secondary, forward facing flash-head for fill-flash when the main head is being bounced, and a USB port for installing firmware update. The Metz has an 8 full-stop power range, from full power down to 1/256th! Unfortunately, the flash lacks a sync-socket. The only European flash in the lot, the Metz 58 AF-2 is an impressive piece of equipment. While it does offer high-speed sync and wireless eTTL, it lacks the ability to use an external power pack, and it doesn’t have a sync-socket. ![]() The build quality of the flash lags a little behind the others, unfortunately, particularly the plastic hot-shoe foot. The Sigma leads the pack in power output, with a guide-number of 61 m. Sigma’s offering, the EF-610 DG Super (not to be confused with the ST model), is a moderately priced, fully featured flash from a respected Japanese company. However, it does not lead the group in every category.Ĭanon’s 430ex II offers much of the functionality of the 580ex II, but is not quite as powerful, can’t act as control module for wireless eTTL, and doesn’t offer connections for external power supplies or flash sync cords. Of all the flashes mentioned here, the 580ex II has the highest build quality, including dust and weather sealing. Though this system works well in many situations, it requires line-of-sight between the flash and camera, and it is unreliable in bright daylight.Īll of the following flashes are compatible with Canon’s eTTL II flash metering system, and while all of the flashes listed are ALSO compatible with Canon’s wireless eTTL triggering system, not all eTTL flashes are.īattery Life ( Full Power Flashes, Alkaline Batteries)Ĭanon’s 580ex II is the standard by which all other flashes for Canon are measured. In many modern flashes, the communication between the flash and camera can also occur wirelessly, via a series of visible light pre-flashes or infra-red (IR) light. When the light meter determines that the scene has received enough light from the flash, it sends a signal to the flash through the hot-shoe to cut the power. TTL stands for “through the lens”, referring to the fact that the flash output is metered through the lens in real-time during the exposure. Many photographers, especially those working in rapidly changing lighting situations, enjoy working with automatic TTL flash. Below, I’ll compare some of the strongest offerings currently available. While Canon’s 580ex II offers modern features like high-speed sync (HSS) and wireless eTTL capabilities, there are now numerous competitors offering models with very similar functionality, as well as less expensive models with limited features. As usual, your best choice will depend heavily on your shooting style and specific needs. Beyond the obvious options from Canon, there are a variety of other models available from well known brands, as well as some good options from lesser known brands. With the increased demand, the number of flash choices has also grown. Over the past several years, the use of creative, off-camera flash among photographers has exploded, fueled in part by camera manufacturers’ implementation of built-in wireless flash control. ![]() These black areas will block the light from exposing the emulsion.Īs a result, the covered areas will continue to remain water soluble while the exposed emulsions will no longer remain so. The scoop coater may serve your purpose better as it provides a more consistent and even distribution of the emulsion. You can apply the emulsion with either scoop coater or a Squeegee. It is sensitive to light and becomes most sensitive when dry. The screen needs to be coated with the liquid chemical called the emulsion. The RIP software is conditioned to help your PC and printer to produce 100% opaque outputs. The professionals use printers such as Epson and Xanté with the RIP software. Several excellent inkjet printers are available on the market that you can choose from. If the film lacks required opaqueness, you won’t be able to make a great stencil. Producing the design accurately on the film positive is crucial to creating a perfect stencil. That means, if your design includes 4-colors, you’d need a separate screen for each of them. Keep in mind that you would need a separate screen for each color. It would be foolish to use same mash count for every screen.įor designs of standard detail, 110 mash count should serve well, however, for more detailed design a screen of higher mash count will be required. The screens should be large enough to accommodate the designs. I’d suggest that you go with aluminum as it’s more durable than the wood frames. You can use either wood or aluminum to make the frame. It can be bought from a store, or you can build one for yourself. The ScreenĪ screen will be required to make the stencil, through which the ink will pass onto your shirt. However, if you are working on a budget, you can start with a 4-color press, with which you can get your business up and running. While the 8-color press is the best in the market, 6-color press will also suffice. Lack of versatility will restrict your options and cost you potential clients.ĭon’t worry about the price as a great press pays for itself over time. If you are looking forward to expanding the business in future, then go for a versatile press that is able to print multiple colors. There are various ways to create beautiful artworks. After all, it’s the design which consumers are paying for. First, you need an attractive and marketable artwork. This particular P60 Enfield belonged to Berry Benson, a sharpshooter with McGowan's South Carolina brigade. The short guns were given them, as they were lighter and handier." Both kinds had a long range and were very effective. "Every short Enfield which came into possession of any of our men was taken away and given to these men," said a Georgian in Gordon's brigade, "but there were not enough, and some of them had the common long Enfield. ![]() The two-band Enfield quickly became the top choice for Confederate sharpshooters. The Pattern 56 and 58 rifles had a light three-groove barrel, while the Pattern 60 Army rifle and the Pattern 58 Navy rifle both featured a heavier five-groove barrel with progressive depth rifling and a faster 1:48 twist, giving them superior accuracy. All had 33-inch barrels and an overall length of 48½ inches and were often called "two-band" Enfields after the number of bands securing the barrel. ( courtesy West Point Museum)Įnfield also produced several shorter versions of its P53 rifle-musket. The long rifle was thought necessary so that the muzzles of the second rank of soldiers would project beyond the faces of the men in front, and so that the weapon would be sufficiently long for a bayonet fight. The term “rifle-musket” meant that the rifle was the same length as the musket it replaced. Including the 17-inch blade on its triangular socket bayonet, the Enfield rifle-musket measured just over six feet long. With practice a good marksman could hit a man-sized target at about half that distance. For distances beyond that an adjustable flip-up blade sight was graduated (depending on the model and date of manufacture) from 900 to 1250 yards. The Enfield’s adjustable ladder rear sight had steps for 100 (the default or “battle sight” range), 200, 300, and 400 yards. Sixty-eight grains of black powder pushed a 530-grain Prichett ball (or a Burton-Minié ball) along at about 850-900 feet per second. Three metal bands held the P53s three-groove, 39-inch barrel (which sported a 1:78 twist) to the stock, and as such the weapon was often referred to as the “three-band” model. ![]() 577 caliber rifle was as close to a standard infantry weapon as the Confederacy ever got and was also used in large numbers by the Union. This nine and a half pound, single shot, muzzle loading. In this study, Gary Yee, an expert in firearms of the period, assesses the role played by sharpshooters in three bloody clashes at the height of the American Civil War - the battle of Fredericksburg, the siege of Vicksburg, and the siege of Battery Wagner.Confederate ordnance chief Josiah Gorgas called the Enfield, or British Pattern 53 Long Rifle-Musket, named for the year of its adoption, “the finest arm in the world.” Sturdy, reliable, and extremely accurate even at extended ranges, it consistently outshot everything but the Whitworth and quickly became a favorite on both sides. Initially, Union marksmen enjoyed the upper hand, but as the Confederates began raising and training their own sharpshooters, they proved themselves as worthy opponents. They could also become expert scouts and, for the Confederacy, impressive raiders - one raid netted almost 250 prisoners. Siege warfare placed a premium on marksmanship and the sharpshooter became indispensable as they could drive artillerymen from their guns. Sometimes equipped with firearms no better than those of their infantry brethren, they fought in a manner reminiscent of Napoleonic-era light infantry.
